Synergy is a coperative mod for Half-Life 2. As well as opening up the Half-Life 2 campagin all the way through to the end of Episode 2 for coperative play it features stand alone maps.
Becuase Synergy changed radically - and in many ways for the worse - when it when onto Steam, maps for Synergy 1.1 are still porvided, in case people are still hording copies of 1.1 for them and their friends. However, these maps are not being developed anymore.
Empires

The Empires mod brings FPS and RTS together with large battles between huge numbers of players working as a team with a commander directing action and placing buildings.
In your standard game a commander on each team will be responsible for placing bulidings, conducting research, and giving players orders, which players will proply ignore. Players are responsible for building the buildings, killing the enemy, and bashing their new tanks into anything and everything.
In addition to that there are capture point varriants, most without a commander, that may or may not feature tanks.
All around it's pretty fun.
