Spacecraft of the Independents Mod

Although this mod uses the defualt Freelancer models all the spacecraft have been redone. This includes entirely new stats built from the ground up without reference to the default ships and hardpoint modifications either adding in new hardpoints or modifiying exsiting ones. This is the best of both worlds because it provides spacecraft that behave like entirly new ones, yet the quality origonal models are retained and there are no problems with conformity. Not to mention the mod size is reduced.

Spacecraft Classifications

The Independents mod introduceds new spacecraft classifications that offer more accurate information on the crafts abilities and role. Spacecraft are group into one of four primary classifications, each of which is further broken down.

Spaceship (SPC) — ship small enough to dock at station berths.

Starship (STS) — ship too large to dock at station berths.

Space Combatants

Millitary Spacecraft

Fighters — fixed forward firing weapons and primary acceleration along the longitudinal axis only.

Corvettes — smaller than frigates with turreted weapons and good acceleration on all axis.

Frigates — larger than corvettes with full coverage by turrets and fair acceleration on lateral and vertical axis. Frigates are sometime

Star Combatants

Military Starships

Destroyers — Lightly armoured ships with fexible armaments. Destroyers range in size with the smallest being Destroyer Escorts or sometimes Third-Rate Destroyers, the next up being Destroyers again sometimes Second-Rate Destroyers, and finnaly the mightly Battledestroyers also know as the First-Rate Destoyers.

Cruisers — Heavily armoured ships with limited but powerful armaments. Like destroyers Cruisers are further classified based on size using the rating system giving Third-Rate, Second-Rate, and First-Rate Cruisers.

Non combatants

Civilian spacecraft

Salvage — Spacecraft of varrious sizes used for salvage and mining.

Sloop — Small, short range spacecraft.

Brigantine — Larger more utilitarian spacecraft than the Sloop. Brigantines are commonly used for short fast trade runs.

Barquentine — Trdae starship with internal cargo storage. Barquentines are the super haulers of space and quench the thrist for trade in between the core worlds.

Freighter — Trade starship with external cargo storage in pods. Freighters are generaly more rugged and cheap than Barquentines, serving as workhorses of industry.

Armed Merchantmen

Civilian spacecraft converted for military use

Sloop of War — Corvette sized spacecraft with similar manouvbility but a mix of fixed and turreted weapons. Some War Sloops are purpose biult and thus are technicaly not Armoured Merchantmen but are included in the classification anyway due to their similar armaments and performance.

Gun Brig — A Brigantine which has been converted for combat. Comparable to a firgate and generally successful in similar roles.

Gun Barque — A Barquentine which has been converted for combat. Although a fearsome sight for non-combatants gun barqs typicaly pose little threat to combat ships.

Merchant Raider — A Merchant Raider is either: a Freighter which has been converted for combat, or any merchant craft which has beeen equiped with hidden weapons to lure pirates in close. Raiders usulay are used to take on only lightly armed oponents but are quite adequate at that task.

Kelper Solar Federation

Federation Armed Forces Ships

Screenshot of FAF 32F Insurrection

32F Insurrection

Fighter

The Insurrection is the latest in a long line of successful fighters employed by the FAF. Incorporating the newest advancements in shielding technology the Insurrection has previously unheard of capabilities.

New advancements in shielding technologies has allowed the armour to be cut down considerably making the Insurrection smaller and lighter than previous generations of fighters. The higher energy demands of the shielding system and smaller frame however more than counter the advancements to fuel and energy systems meaning the Insurrection has considerably reduced range.

Like most Federation designs the Insurrection carries heavy firepower but lacks the endurance for extended combat. The philosophy being to quickly overwhelm the opposing forces then retreat.

Screenshot of FAF 36A Revolution

36A Revolution

Fighter

The Revolution is an older Federation ship. It has been extensively refitted to incorporate modern advancements to energy, engine, and especially shielding systems. Although still bulky and sluggish compared with modern fighter the refits have given the Revolution extended life as an attack ship and bomber.

Because of it's older large frame the Revolution can carry fuel and energy to give it superior range over the modern Insurrection. It also caries significantly more firepower although it has a some difficultly time bringing those weapons to bare upon small fighters in the mist of a dogfight.

The Revolution exemplifies Federation philosophy of superior firepower at the expense of combat endurance. Against other fighters the Revolution's best chance of success is to use that firepower to score a quick victory and avoid a dogfight altogether.

Screenshot of FAF L30 Defiant

L30 Defiant

Destroyer 3rd-Rate

The Defiant is an old asset of the FAF. Originally conceived before the tension with the Colonial Republic to counter the growing problem of piracy from small converted sloops and frigates. In this role the Defiant excelled. It had the range to patrol the outer system that fighters lacked and was highly capable against small craft. Today upgrades to it's systems have let it retain that capability against fighters; however Its inability to engage modern military frigates and larger has limited it to a role of providing anti-fighter support in modern fleets.

In modern terms the Defiant is old, and the FAF is in the process of replacing them with more modern destroyer escorts taking advantage of new advancements in shielding technology. However, the first modern replacement, the Freedom class, faired rather poorly and so the phasing out of the Defiants has been pushed back until the Federation is confident its new destroyer escort, the Sovereignty, meets expectations.

Screenshot of FAF L47 Sovereignty

L47 Sovereignty

Destroyer 3rd-Rate

Learning from the Freedom class, which although possessing an impressive armament had chronic reactor problems and suffered from low manoeubrability. The FAF commissioned a new development project for a destroyer escort type ship.

The result was the Sovereignty class 3rd rate destroyer. Although its weapon armaments is less powerful than the Freedom class Sovereignty class is quite capable in a fight with substantially more armour and manoeubrability.

The Sovereignty class has only been in server for a short while and although it was originally slated to replace the Defiant class destroyers it is already becoming apparent that the two classes work together very well.

Screenshot of FAF H50 Ascendancy

H50 Ascendancy

Destroyer 2nd-Rate

The Ascendancy is the Federation's front-line starship. With a much more flexible armament than the Defiant the Ascendancy is a much more capable ship. It is however still vulnerable when unescorted, possibly more so than the Defiant due to its slower manoeuvring.

I39 Domination

Destroyer 1st-Rate

Engineered by the Federation Armed Forces and their military industrial complex, this class utilizes many advances that are considered classified.

Deep Space Engineering Ships

Screenshot of DSE YS-87

YS-87

Salvage

The Deep Space Engineering YS-87 is a light salvage craft well suited to small mining and salvage operations. Its cruise capability combined with the longer endurance compared with other craft of similar size make it a favoured choice amongst small independent operators.

YS-124

Salvage

The Deep Space Engineering YS-124 is a medium salvage craft well suited to mining and salvage operations. Its cruise capability combined with the longer endurance compared with other craft of similar size make it a favoured choice amongst independent operators.

YS-212

Salvage

The Deep Space Engineering YS-212 is a large bulk hauler first designed for large short range hauling on large scale construction operations. Although it has a low top speed, it can be positioned as needed with much higher precession than other large haulers.

YS-279

Salvage

The Deep Space Engineering YS-279 is a heavy mining ship well suited to deep space mining operations. With extreme endurance compared with ship of any size and good sized cargo hold the YS-279 can operate in space for very long periods of time filling up it's hold.

Daumann Heavy Construction Ships

Brigantine

he Daumann Nightingale is a fairly standard Brigantine type spacecraft. Equipped with a simple shield generator and fairly high impulse speed though the craft is actually fairly well suited to getting through contested areas.

Colonial Republic

Colonial Republic Military Ships

Screenshot of CRM F-17E Hermes

F-17E Hermes

Fighter

The Hermes is a simple and rugged design. A cockpit perched atop a powerful engine with a couple of gun strapped to the sides. And it fills a simple roll too, that of quickly getting those weapons to where they are needed and to dominate the battlespace with them.

The Colonial Military's trust of fighter craft is lower than that of the Federation Armed Forces. This steams from the view that fighters exist only to counter other fighters and therefore they lack versatility and the ability to operate on their own. As a result the Hermes was designed to be robust and powerful enough to engage frigates and starships.

Compared with other fighters the Hermes is well endowed with firepower and possess a wide array of weapon systems. This however has not made the Hermes a more potent dogfighter, it does however make the Hermes a largely more versatile ship an should a flight of Hermes fighter come across a destroyer they would be more than capable of engaging it on the spot without need to return to base for anti-starship weapons.

A-26C Artemis

Corvette

The Artemis is a new spacecraft of the Colonial Military designed to compliment the C-19B Apollo Corvette by carrying heavy anti-starship weapon systems. Adding these capabilities to a platform capable that closely matches the Apollo in range and speed means neither ship is operating below it's capabilities to keep pace with the other.

Like the Apollo the Artemis is a rather specialized craft; however in combination with the Apollo the two craft are remarkably generalized in what they perform. The result is two smaller lighter craft working as one. It is a setup that has received much attention at Military Command and as long as there is a need for small craft capable of fast response the Colonial Military is likely to keep the system of splitting roles between two craft.

Screenshot of CRM C-19B Apollo

C-19B Apollo

Corvette

The C-19B is a highly modern and advanced corvette and is the pride of the Colonial Military's strike craft. With new weapon systems the Apollo is one of the most lethal anti-fighter platforms in existence.

Although the highly specialized anti-fighter roll breaks with Military ideology the Apollo has proven itself more than enough to overcome such resistance. The Anti-fighter corvette fist earned a place in the military fleet when the military was unable to field a fighter that could compete with those of the Federation Armed Force. The corvette was seen as a necessary ship to fill that roll. Since then the Military has had such success with anti-fighter corvettes that it they have earned there place in the fleet.

Screenshot of CRM FF-27 Helios

FF-27 Helios

Frigate

The Helios frigate is a small multi-purpose weapons platform developed to compliment the Athena by rounding out the Colonial Military's core fleet. Like it's larger sister, the Athena, the Helios is quite sturdy and capable of holding its own in a fight, although being a smaller platform it has significantly less firepower than the Athena. Unlike its sister though, the Helios is cruise capable and can be set up as a highly effective anti-strike platform.

The Helios was conceived when faced with expanding space to patrol and the growing capabilities of small strike craft the Athena was starting to look old to Military command. A whole new cruiser wasn't wanted though. Instead command wanted a ship to compliment the Athena a fill the gaps that it left. That ship is the Helios frigate.

Capable of mounting both fifth-rate and fourth-rate weapons, the Helios can be configured to deal with anything from fighters to third-rate starships. Typically Helios frigates are most at home with a balanced armament to deal with many possible targets while on patrol or engaging in small skirmishes. In larger feats however the Helios can also be a force to be reckoned with when carrying a specialized armament.

Screenshot of CRM CB-22 Athena

CB-22 Athena

Cruiser

Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom who fights to protect and defend, is fitting name for this cruiser. The Athena cruiser was the earliest purpose built warship in the Colonial Republic and it has server to protect Republic space ever since.

The Athena was constructed around a large Contained Energy Cannon (CEC), which remains one of the most destructive weapons in the Colonial Military's arsenal, creating a distinctive shape that has come to symbolize the Colonial Military.

Although an engineering marvel at the time of their construction, Athena destroyers are now somewhat aged. However, their sturdy heavily armoured hulls have held up well and after decades of service the Athena has more than proven itself and its capabilities are respected throughout the colonies. This ship remains a powerful asset of the Colonial Military. Although old this cruise will be here for some time still.

Screenshot of CRM CC-21 Nemesis

CC-21 Nemesis

Heavy Cruiser

The Nemesis heavy cruiser is a new addition to the Colonial Military fleet. As an offensive warship named after the god of vengeance the Nemesis aims to like it's namesake avenge those who are wronged. The Nemesis serves as the Colonial Republic's deterrent to war and should war come it will lead the offensive.

The Nemesis is a simple design and has been described as attaching and engine to a block of armour and sticking guns on the outside. In truth the ship is a fair bit more advanced, but it's advanced electronics are hardly visible behind the almost metre of armour that covers critical areas.

Being new the Nemesis has not yet had time to prove itself. To add to that the Colonial Military has kept the ship out of sight, highly suggesting there are still some secretes about it that the Military would like to keep.

Screenshot of CRM DB-11 Ares

DB-11 Ares

Battledestroyer

In its day Ares battledestroyer was, like its namesake, the god of war in the colonies with no rival capable of standing against it. Designed at a time when it seamed missile technology would be the future the Ares was equipped with sophisticated state-of-the-art active defensive systems. This afforded reduced armour and more offensive systems designed to give the Ares first strike capability in most situations.

These design changes repented a fundamental shift in Colonial Military design. A shift that was short lived, despite it's success the relatively fragile nature of the design was not favour and all designs since the Ares have fallen back on the old rugged cruiser designs.

The Ares has aged a far bit since its prime and having been highly dependent upon advanced technologies it has aged a little worse than other more rugged Colonial Military designs. Modern upgrades to electronic systems have extended the Ares' life, but the aged class is being overshadowed by the newer Nemesis heavy cruisers.

Cryer Industries Ships

P231 A.C. Clarke

Sloop-of-War

Cryer Industries, having built a reputation on defensible ships, designed the P231 Clarke escort fighter to fill a growing gap in the defenses of their ships. That gap was the range of defensive weapons capable of hitting small spacecraft threatening the ship compared with the range of offensive anti-ship weapons those small spacecraft could cary. Cryer needed a weapon system that could pursue threats beyond the immediate space.

The design of the Clarke fighter utilized the basic hull from the P251 Adams sloop. Weight was cut down and fighter weapon systems were added. The result was a fairly cheap long rang fighter-sloop hybrid to escort merchant craft.

Most Cryer vessels are popular choices for conversions to armed merchantman craft by criminal organizations. Naturally it took those organizations almost no time to snatch up the first Cryer craft purpose built for combat and engineer their own variants of it. Cryer officially condemns use of its craft in anything but strictly defensive rolls.

The P251 Adams sloop was designed as a mid-range hauler and shuttle craft to facilitate loading and unloading of starships at stations without starship facilities. Like all Cryer vessels it is equipped with some minimal armaments for self defence.

Most Cryer vessels are popular choices for conversions to armed merchantman, and the Adams sloop is no exception. With its cargo space convered to carry weapon and fuel the P251 actually makes a fair combat ship. Cryer officially condemns use of its craft in anything but strictly defensive rolls.

T65 C.S. Lewis

Freighter

The Lewis and Asimov freighters are the backbone of Cryer's shipbuilding industry. Their simple cheap design, ability to cary large amounts of cargo for their size, and ability to defend themselves from attacks has made them extremely popular for hauling cargo outside of the protected core systems. For starships they are also fairly maneuverable and thus capable of making faster turn arounds.

The Lewis Freighter is the smaller freighter and carries half as much as the Asimov. Its advantages are its lower cost and its greater manoeuvrability and acceleration over the Asimov.

Due to their ability to defend themselves Cryer's freighters are fairly popular for conversion into armed merchantman for combat. The Lewis is the more popular of the two freighters for conversion because of it's greater manoeuvrability. Cryer officially condemns use of its craft in anything but strictly defensive rolls.

C-504 King

Corvette

The C-504 is a purpose built escort corvette designed by Interspace to be able to compete with Cryer in the expanding out systems trade market where demand for self defense is very high. Rather than altering their existing starships Interspace decided to create a line of craft specializing in escort.

The C-504 was the second craft built in that line. It is a lighter corvette designed to quickly engage and deal with smaller threats than the C-501.

By designing craft specifically for the escort roll Interspace was able to crate top of the line craft that easily out performed Cryer's in combat rolls, but faired a little worse off on long haul escorts. Interspace was hoping to attract some security firms to buy these craft for dedicated defensive rolls around installations.

Brigantine

The Union Brigantine was built to act as a shuttle craft to assist with loading and unloading of the Chester and Christie Barquentines at stations without shipyard facilities. Interspace indented for the Union to be stationed at such stations and be used locally, hanse it has a rather short range. However, in practice most shipping companies have found it beneficial to have their own loading shuttles fly with their starships since it's range is more than enough to cover the distances in the core systems.

YBQ-63 Chester

Barquentine

The Chester Barquentine is the primary merchant starship designed by Interspace. Designed to be a long distance hauler the Chester is fast and has a massive cargo hold. It was the hauler of choice for shipping companies for decades until the frontier stated to open up and Cryer managed to get a larger share of the new market. However, the Chester does still remain a popular choice for hauler operators in the core.

The Christie Barquentine is the top of the line merchant starship designed by Interspace. Designed to be a long distance hauler like the Chester the Christie is a little faster and has a little more cargo space. The Christie never really caught on like the Chester though because of its premium price and the sudden growth in the market for cheaper more rugged hauler to handle the frontier.

Ageira Technologies Ships

C-77 Aitrus

Corvette

The Aitrus corvette was designed by the now defunct Ageira ship design division. Cost overruns on the production and overestimations of the demand meant Ageira never turned a profit on the sale of its ships despite producing a fair number. So many were produced in fact that today Ageira ships can still be found in use out in the frontier where other craft can be too expensive.

The C-77 Aitrus was designed to be a long range escort and patrol craft equipped with the then brand new shielding technology. Problems with the shielding, lack of trust in a small corvette to accomplish what was at the time a frigate or even a starship roll, and overall mediocre performance kept the Aitrus from becoming mainstream. But many of those same traits, especially the long range and existing shielding systems, have helped to kept the craft in use to this day at least in remote areas.

YBG-84 Leira

Brigantine

The Leira brigantine was designed by the now defunct Ageira ship design division. Cost overruns on the production and overestimations of the demand meant Ageira never turned a profit on the sale of its ships despite producing a fair number. So many were produced in fact that today Ageira ships can still be found in use out in the frontier where other craft can be too expensive.

The YBG-84 Leira was designed to be a small long range merchant vessel equipped with the then brand new shielding technology for self defense. Problems with the shielding and the market trend towards larger super haulers that was pushing small operators out of business kept the demand for the Leira low and Ageira was force to give the craft away for next to nothing in order to try and recoup some costs. Many those Leiras found their way to the frontier where small time operators made up the entire market for many years.

Outcast Alliance Ships

P431 Saul

Sloop-of-War

The Saul is a heavily modified Cryer Industries Clarke class fighter. The basic Clarke frame is striped down and equipped with more weapons, armour, and fuel at the expense of cargo space responsive handling.

The Saul fighter is really little match for most military fighters, but it's heavy firepower is not to be dismissed out of hand. Using ambush tactics and its speed to avoid turning fights the Saul can pose a fair threat.

P451 Brite

Sloop-of-War

The Brite is a heavily modified Cryer Industries Adams class sloop. The basic Adams frame is striped down and equipped with more weapons, armour, and fuel at the expense of cargo space responsive handling.

The Brite sloop is essentially a heavy attack craft with very heavy forward firing armaments. Its low manoeuvrability and lack of turreted weapons makes it quite venerable to fighters, but its speed help keep it out of turning fights.

Screenshot of Alliance Q85 Ackroyd

Q85 Ackroyd

Merchant Raider

The Ackroyd is a heavily modified Cryer Industries Lewis class freighter. The changes include a little extra amour, more weapons, and massive shield generators in place of cargo pods.

Despite the best attempts of the Outcast Alliance the Ackroyd is not a warship. It is very capable against merchant craft, but against INF forces, let alone the powerful CM or FAF the ship falls short. However, it is the best the Alliance has available.

The Ackroyd's one strength is its heavy low-pass shielding. Its shields can hold up very well under sustained fire, as long as supplied with batteries. The Ackroyd is typically used at short range to finish engagements quickly with the support of the smaller more mobile armed merchantmen in the Alliance fleet.

Screenshot of Alliance Q91 Koontz

Q91 Koontz

The Koontz is a heavily modified Cryer Industries Asimov class freighter. The changes include a little extra amour, more weapons, and massive shield generators in place of cargo pods.

Despite the best attempts of the Outcast Alliance the Koontz is not a warship. It is very capable against merchant craft, but against INF forces, let alone the powerful CM or FAF the ship falls short.

Like the Ackroyd the Koontz strength is its heavy low-pass shielding. with two extra shield generators the Knootz is even more capable at holding up under sustained fire, as long as its supply of shield batteries lasts. The loss of manoeuvrability though makes it harder for the Koontz to get in close to targets, and the lack of significantly more firepower over the Ackroyd makes the Knootz a less preferred choice.

Pirate Clans Ships

C-87 Ghen

Corvette

It should be no surprise that many old Ageira vessels wound up in the hands of pirate clans. Not because they were capable vessels but because they were made in such numbers and no one else really wants them any more.

The C-87 Ghen corvette the the pirate conversion of the C-77 Aitrus. Although not really much has been changed besides a little added armour to the hull.
